Keeping in Mind Things before Meeting an Attorney

If you have decided to file bankruptcy, then you must get all the questions and queries answered. Since filing bankruptcy is a complicated process, you need to hire a bankruptcy attorney to help you with it. However, your first meeting with the attorney is very important and hence, you cannot rush into things.

Here are some things that you need to keep in mind when you are visiting your attorney for the first time.

Keep all your Questions Ready

Your initial meeting with your attorney should involve a lot of questions and queries that can help you in getting clarity on the procedure of bankruptcy and what type of bankruptcy will you need to file under. You also need to understand how many hearings you may need to attend, what kind of paperwork that is involved in the process, etc.

Also, get all the necessary information regarding chapter 7 and chapter 11 of bankruptcy. The attorney will give you a clear picture of the whole process and paperwork.

Be Ready with Information of Assets and Liabilities

Before your attorney takes your case, he or she will need to understand all the assets and liabilities that you have. He or she will also need to know what kind of loans you have, if you have any mortgage, whether someone owes you money, etc. Based on these details, the attorney can help you with the paperwork.

Be prepared to answer all the Questions

Any experienced attorney will need to know your case very clearly and honestly. This is necessary to ensure for him or her to file your bankruptcy efficiently and also represent you properly. He or she may ask you questions that may make you feel uncomfortable at a certain point in time. However, do make sure you still answer all the questions as your answers are confidential.

Make all the Necessary Notes during the Meeting

Make sure that you make all the necessary notes during the meeting so that you do not forget important information or documents that you may need to provide the attorney. For a workers’ compensation attorney, the most important information is regarding your workers and how to compensate them with your bankruptcy. Get all the necessary information to your attorney so that he can prepare your papers accordingly.

Keep your Communication Clear and Honest

If you want to file bankruptcy and not get into any kind of trouble in later stages, then make sure that you are clear and honest with your attorney. This will help you during the hearings. Hence, be honest with him and communicate regularly.
